Planning the Honeymoon

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

It is all too easy to get so engrossed in the wedding planning, that you might neglect thinking about the most important alone time as newlyweds; the honeymoon! In fact, it’s easy to even miss this out of your overall budget which is why couples often find it easier to use the services of a wedding planner who will remember and stay on top of these finer details.

I totally understand how all the pressure and anxiety can deter you from thinking about this honeymoon stuff, but that’s even more reason to make time to think about it! It is absolutely crucial that you schedule in time to research your honeymoon not only to make sure you have something wonderful to look forward to, but also for your own sanity during the stresses of wedding planning. It can be an excuse to think about something different and unwind, while also maintaining productivity.

Budget

The first thing to have a think about is, have you got a budget for your honeymoon? What is your budget? This will make it easier to plan, pre-book excursions, and have small details in place that will make it extra special if you want it to be.

Don't let the excitement of the engagement up to the big day distract you from continually reviewing and setting aside how much spending money you will want to take on the honeymoon. – there’s no harm in planning way ahead! At least this way, you might thank yourself later for being able to splash out on anything and everything that you might want to on the honeymoon.

What do you want?

This is perhaps the most important question you should be asking yourselves in the beginning. Grab a bottle of wine, your white board and pen, and get some ideas down in a mind-map or list – however your brains work best! But make a fun evening out of it, it’s a good excuse for you both to unwind and be merry together. A very quiet and picturesque getaway, or a loud party island? Are you into doing nothing and sunbathing, or being out and about exploring? Either way, it’s all about what you both as a couple will want to enjoy doing together, in each other’s company, after an extremely hectic and ecstatic time of your life, and no one knows that better than the both of you.

Minimoon or Honeymoon?

A minimoon is becoming a popular choice for many, often because it’s nice to just get away somewhere local straight after all that build up to the big day and the celebration of the big day itself; but it also gives you more time – and a bigger budget – to plan an even bigger and better honeymoon further down the line. Research

Once you’ve narrowed your ideas down on the location, it’s time to start doing some research about what the places can offer you. It’s okay to totally change your mind if you find that the location isn’t giving you what you want. Once you’ve found the right place you both feel the same way about – you’ll definitely know!

Calculate the Costs

Finally, calculate an approximation of the costs that you are likely to spend on the booking of the honeymoon and while you’re out there, and see how this works into the initial budget you have outlined. You might also want to start prioritising excursions and splitting them into categories of ones that could possibly wait to be booked closer to the time, or when you’re actually on the honeymoon itself, to allow you time to save more, if you like.
